On Autonymy (With Reference to Romanian)
Abstract
In this paper, autonymy is presented as a universal datum of natural languages and a fundamental element of metalanguage. Our main purpose is to define the term and make a distinction between language and metalanguage, on the one hand, and, inside the metalinguistic field, between autonyms and metalinguistic terms stricto sensu, on the other hand. We focus on autonymy, emphasizing its features at different levels and, on a comparative basis, pointing out the specificity of this procedure in Romanian.
